Whether it is a small office space, dorm, or apartment, we have all experienced living in rooms that do not offer much space. While this might seem frustrating at first, you can make even the smallest space feel worlds bigger if you follow our interior design tips for small spaces. From choosing the correct lighting to selecting proper storage, we can help open up any space. Read on to learn more!
One of our first interior design tips for small spaces involves lighting. Usually, spaces have their own overhead lighting. However, this is often not adequate or is too harsh for our liking. That is why many homes feature end tables with ornate lamps. This allows us to set a custom mood with our lighting and make the home more welcoming. Unfortunately, lamps take up an ample amount of surface space. For smaller spaces, we recommend finding tall, skinny floor lamps. This prevents any limited surface space from being taken up. This will give your space the proper lighting it deserves without making the room feel cramped. You can also make the most of your space’s lighting with our Silhouette® Window Shadings. By softly filtering light, this custom shade collection will fill your space with natural sunlight without any harsh glare.
Another one of our interior design tips for small spaces is finding proper storage. For example, a wide, massive dresser might hold a lot of clothes, but it will also take up a lot of space. This is why we recommend finding dressers that are taller than they are wide and feature deep drawers for maximum storage. Instead of bulky bookshelves, small offices can utilize “floating shelves” that you can place on your walls to hold books, notes, and more. Finally, for small bedrooms or dorms, you can add storage shelves and cubbies to a closet space to help keep clutter in one convenient space that is out of sight. You can also place cubbies discreetly under your bed to free up space without sacrificing your need for storage as well.
As much fun as decorating is, it can quickly get out of hand if you do not carefully select different pieces. For example, wall art, framed photos, and wall accents are great ways to add character to a space without taking up too much room. You can also place a small number of trinkets, candles, clocks, and other items on available surface space. The key with these, however, is to pick a few consistent pieces to place throughout the room. This will not only create a fluid look, but it will also cut down on unnecessary clutter as well.
While small spaces might be frustrating at first, we like to look at it as an opportunity to challenge your inner creative! Whether you have a small office space or just moved into a dorm, these tips will help open up any space.
